It’s not easy fitting Dynamo into one musical genre. And in some cases, onto one stage. Formed in late 2012, the nine-person, Nashville-based band fuses jazz, rock, and funk with elements of soul and R&B. The culmination is a sound that’s both spontaneous and composed—and an energy that’s undeniably infectious.

Due in part to the band’s size (nine core musicians, with special guests, like Prince’s trombone player, Roy Agee, occasionally sitting in), Dynamo’s style is the well-honed amalgam of its members’ varying tastes. Live shows feature long improvisational breaks, in which Dynamo’s members playfully pull listeners along as they veer from funk to hip-hop to jazz, sometimes within the course of a single tune.

When not playing or recording in Nashville, Dynamo has performed at more than 75 venues all over the country, including stops at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC, Prophet Bar in Dallas, Texas, and The Willow in New Orleans. Their music has earned accolades from industry heavyweights—like Jeff Coffin, saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band—and music critics alike. Of a recent Dynamo show in Winchester, Va., writer Taco Olmstead confessed, “Not often does a band completely blow me away and manage to appeal to all of my musical appetites … I felt pity for those who were missing out on a show of this caliber and intimacy.”

Released in March 2014, Dynamo’s first album, Live from Ocean Way, was recorded with a live audience at Nashville’s famed Ocean Way Studios. Their sophomore album, another live effort called Find Your Way, drops April 14, 2015.
