It’s not easy fitting Dynamo into one musical genre. And in some cases, onto one stage. Formed in late 2012, the Nashville-based band fuses jazz, rock, and funk with elements of soul and R&B. The culmination is a sound that’s both spontaneous and composed—and an energy that’s undeniably infectious.
Due in part to the band’s size, Dynamo’s style is the well-honed amalgam of its members’ varying tastes. Live shows feature long improvisational breaks, in which Dynamo’s members playfully pull listeners along as they veer from funk to hip-hop to jazz, sometimes within the course of a single tune.
When not playing or recording in Nashville, Dynamo has performs at venues all over the country. Their music has earned accolades from industry heavyweights—like Jeff Coffin, saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band—and music critics alike. Of a recent Dynamo show in Winchester, Va., writer Taco Olmstead confessed, “Not often does a band completely blow me away and manage to appeal to all of my musical appetites … I felt pity for those who were missing out on a show of this caliber and intimacy.”
